I had the wonderful good fortune of being toured around the St. Patrick’s Organic Community Garden in Carbonear this past Thursday. The garden is almost brand new, launched just this spring. It’s a lovely spot situated on a piece of land that used to be the foundation of a school. After the school was taken down Carbonear gave the community gardeners permission to use the land. The old school and nearby St. Patrick’s Church are where the garden gets its name.

16 Community Gardens in St. John’s!
It is so exciting the number of community gardens that are starting up and going strong across the province. We were just doing a count for St. John’s and there are 16 community gardens that we know of in the city! That is AMAZING! Not all of them are open to the public because some serve
smaller communities exclusively.

Perhaps Newfoundlanders have been talking themselves out of a bounty of fresh fruit all these years.

Newfoundland Rhubarb.
Rhubarb is grown almost everywhere around rural Newfoundland. Most every home, even if they don,t grow anything else, has a Rhubard patch and like mine they are started with a few plants from friends or family.Great for jam, jelly and pies.

More old sawdust for the kitchen garden.
I needed more old sawdust so I used the quite essential gardening containers around rural Newfoundland, plastic fish tubs and 5 gallon buckets.
