Food for the soil

Fall is a busy time in the nl kitchen garden,one job is gathering kelp/seaweed to add to the soil for next year.After a couple of windy days this kelp was torn from the bottom and washed up on the beach.When I see this happen I'm always reminded of a few lines I read in the book Moonfleet years ago.."blow wind.. rise storm..ship ashore before morn".

Growing Veggies in Kelp

Kelp has many uses in the nl kitchen garden. In fact pictured below is a raised bed made of all kelp/sea weed. As you can see these cabbages are growing vigorously in the kelp. I'm adding to this bed a few buckets at a time for next years growing

Strawberries

I planted these strawberry plants about three weeks ago. I got them from a friend and I'm excited about starting my own strawberry patch.

I prepared the ground by adding compost, wood ash, and fertilizer. 

Here they are snug in their beds.

I took this picture today. I'm pleased with the way the plants look nice and green. They all survived the transplanting. Also, I added some kelp compost to give them an extra boost before the frost.

Growing plants under lights

Turnips and cabbage are doing good, had them outdoors for a couple of hours today in the cold frame to toughen them up. I'll talk about my newly built cold frame in another post.
