How to sow carrot in Newfoundland

This is how I've been sowing carrots for years with good success.

Prepare the ground for the seed by raking lightly.

Make drills for the seed by pressing the edge of a board approx.1/4 of a inch deep.

With rows approx 8 to 10 inches apart.

This is the seed I use.

Sow plenty of seed  and you can thin them out later.

Close in the drills and firm the soil as shown.

The next step is watering (I forgot to take a picture)Give the soil a good watering with a fine mist..but don't wash the seeds away.To get good germination keep the soil moist.Don't allow it to dry out.

Ross Traverse.

Any serious Newfoundland gardener 'knows' Ross Traverse.What  I mean is,I've never met,talked to, emailed or tweeted Ross Traverse but I feel like I've known him for years.Having listened to him on the radio and read his articles in magazines where he as for years sheared with us freely  his knowledge of gardening topics makes me feel  well acquainted with him.Thanks Ross I'm still learning about this art of gardening  from you.

Chili peppers

I transplanted these chili pepper plants today.

Still waiting for summer.

Saturday was sunny and warm so I gave my strawberry plants a dressing of compost and got to thinking about gardening again.

Today Monday this ,wet snow, that'll dampen your spirits just a little.

Ice in the cove

You've seen this pic before,this is the little cove where I collect kelp/seaweed for my garden.It seems the ice pan's have taken a like'n to it to.

 Here's a pile of kelp /seaweed composting away  at the beach.It's a nice size pile,just a bit is showing out of the snow.

Big turnips for winter

We are quite pleased with our turnip this year.They all grew to a nice size and the ones we've eaten were very tasty....

 Here are the jumbo turnips...weighing 8lbs each

I thought this one looked strange.

This was the only bad one in the bunch

The carrots are finally out of the ground.

Well we finally harvested our carrots today..they were a little hard to get up because the ground is starting to freeze.....

 These are real nice size...for show

 Unusual looking carrots...planted too close together actually....

This is how I store the carrots for winter.....Here I'm using a plastic fish box. I put in a layer of soil and a layer of carrots until the box is full...Did this last winter and it worked out good....

 Here I'm starting the second layer......

Parsnips

We took up a few of our parsnips Tuesday and we were quite pleased with them. As you can see some were quite big a few made 18".We love parsnips cooked and in soups.

This is how I got them ready for the cellar.

These are nice and clean..ready to have their picture taken

I used these seeds to grow my parsnips.
