Super Weed; Nettles Are An Early Spring Food

http://growyourowngroceries.org/a-super-weed/

The thought of eating nettles might alarm you, as this plant is especially painful with even the slightest brush up against it. But drying or cooking takes all the fight out of it and what is left is quite an amazing super food. It is one of the first to greens to emerge in the spring and in most places it is coming out right now

Saving seed in Newfoundland

http://www.thetelegram.com/Living/2011-10-19/article-2780831/Saving-seed/1

A generation or two ago in Newfoundland, saving seeds from vegetables was pretty run-of-the-mill. Back then, saving seed was about saving money, and about saving time, because you couldn’t always pop down to the nearest store to get some.

St. Patrick’s Organic Community Garden

http://rootcellarsrock.ca/2012/07/st-patricks-organic-community-garden

I had the wonderful good fortune of being toured around the St. Patrick’s Organic Community Garden in Carbonear this past Thursday. The garden is almost brand new, launched just this spring. It’s a lovely spot situated on a piece of land that used to be the foundation of a school. After the school was taken down Carbonear gave the community gardeners permission to use the land. The old school and nearby St. Patrick’s Church are where the garden gets its name.

16 Community Gardens in St. John’s!

rootcellarsrock.ca/2013/08/16-community-gardens-in-st-johns

It is so exciting the number of community gardens that are starting up and going strong across the province. We were just doing a count for St. John’s and there are 16 community gardens that we know of in the city! That is AMAZING! Not all of them are open to the public because some serve
smaller communities exclusively.

How to Build an Inexpensive Hoop-Style Greenhouse

http://www.albertahomegardening.com/how-to-build-an-inexpensive-hoop-style-greenhouse/

One of the most valuable assets in my garden is my greenhouse. It has allowed me to grow plants that I normally would not be able to grow, produce crops that the season is not usually long enough to produce, and protect my plants from frosts, hail, or other severe weather that normally would have destroyed my garden.
